How Can We Prepare to Have Difficult Conversations | Joyce.

YouTube video

To mentally prepare for difficult conversations, it’s important to get ourselves into a grounded stateā€”to be present and attentive. We should ensure that we’re in a good physical state, not hungry, tired, or angry. Approaching the conversation with a mindset of compassion and empathy is key, being open to listening to the other person and understanding how they might be feeling or what they are communicating, rather than just focusing on getting our own message across.

It’s important to remember that a conversation is a collaboration. Finding your voice and expressing how you feel in a way that respects both yourself and the other person is crucial. Pay attention to your own emotional regulation and use your emotional intelligence to be mindful of your feelings. If needed, take a break or seek the help of a moderator or mediator. Finally, set an intention for the best outcome; I always approach a difficult conversation by imagining it going as well as possible, with the best outcome for both parties.
